Expanding 230kv infrastructure in south florida
Scope
Service Electric crews set twelve 23,000-pound 230kV reactors and added a new 230kV bay inside an energized South Florida substation as part of a major expansion and upgrade project.
Service Electric crews worked on a major 230kV expansion and reactor upgrade in South Florida. The project included building out a new 230kV bay and installing associated switches, 230kV breakers, CCVTs, line traps, and other equipment needed to support the new line.
Another major part of the project involved upgrades throughout the station, including four new control panels inside the control house and the installation of 12 new 230kV reactors, with six on the east bus and six on the west bus. The reactor scope also included new capacitors, bus, supports, and jumpers on both sides of the station.
At approximately 23,000 pounds each, the reactors were one of the most impressive aspects of the project. Setting equipment of that size within an existing high-voltage substation required careful planning, coordination, and execution from everyone involved. Service Electric crews worked safely and efficiently throughout the project, completing complex work to support the station’s expansion and upgrade.
