Scope
Replacing aging 115kV copper string bus with aluminum bus; upgrading 500 MCM copper to double 1590 AAC with existing jumpers and taps.
At the Grady Substation in Atlanta, Georgia, a major utility needed to upgrade infrastructure that serves the city’s most important facilities. Service Electric crews were given a critical outage to supporting a major utility in their effort.
The scope of work focused on replacing the aging 115kV copper string bus with new aluminum bus, upgrading from 500 MCM copper to double 1590 AAC while maintaining existing jumpers and taps. Crews also replaced strain bus insulators, installed steel modifications to support new configurations, and added phase markers throughout the bus runs. All work was performed on the 115kV side of the station, while a mobile substation kept the 15kV side energized, ensuring uninterrupted service to key customers throughout the outage.
This substation plays a vital role in powering a large portion of metro Atlanta, including Grady Hospital, one of the largest public hospitals in the country, as well as Zoo Atlanta and Mercedes-Benz Stadium, a host venue for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. With the city preparing for an estimated 500,000 visitors during the 2026 World Cup, ensuring system reliability in this area was a top priority for Georgia.
To meet the tight schedule, crews worked around the clock, utilizing both day and night shifts to complete the outage safely and efficiently. The project was delivered on time, and with no issues or incidents, a testament to the planning, coordination, and execution of the Service Electric team.
