Tech Services at Tenaska

At Tenaska in Franklin, Georgia, the Tech Services crew, led by Foreman Chris Keys, illustrated how expertise and problemsolving skills set Service Electric apart. Transformer installation and maintenance demand specialized knowledge, precision, and ingenuity—qualities that Chris and his team demonstrated throughout this project.

The scope of work for Tenaska included substation maintenance items like replacing high voltage bushings, replacing gaskets, and reconditioning oil for three transformers.

One standout example of the team’s resourcefulness was their cost-saving approach to gasket replacement. Instead of relying on costly, manufacturer-ordered gaskets, Chris and his crew fabricated their own using the same high-quality materials. This reduces costs and improves turnaround time without compromising performance—an innovative solution that benefits both Service Electric and its customers.

After replacing the bushings and gaskets, the team connected specialized hoses to drain the transformer oil into a 53-foot mobile oil reconditioning system. This critical process removes water and contaminants that accumulate over time, restoring the oil’s dielectric properties before it is pumped back into the transformer. Without this step, contaminants could lead to transformer failure, making reconditioning essential for longterm reliability.
