emergency transformer repair TO meet re-energization deadline

Scope

Quickly mobilized a Tech Services team to assess and repair a transformer bushing issue, supporting successful re-energization of the substation.

On Wednesday, August 6, one of our customers experienced a bushing failure at the Eagle Rock Substation in Oakland, Maryland, following work performed by another contractor. With a planned outage underway and no available support, the customer team was in a bind as they faced the real possibility of missing their re-energization deadline.

They reached out to Chad Crumley, a supervisor with MJ Electric, another Quanta Services company. Thanks to Chad’s strong working relationship with North Region VP Carter Adams, he passed the opportunity along to the Service Electric Tech Services team. Our team quickly connected with the customer, and in less than 24 hours, they mobilized to the site.

The full Tech Services team, led by Nick Pratt, Chanse Hopkins, and James Walker, arrived on-site on Friday and quickly diagnosed the problem: the draw lead on the bushing had been installed improperly. From there, they removed the bushing, opened the transformer tank, drained a portion of the oil, and began the repair.

The customer remained on-site throughout the process and expressed their appreciation for Service Electric’s professionalism, transformer expertise, safety practices, and attention to detail. They were especially impressed with the team’s use of hold points for documentation, review, and engineering authorization. The crew remained on-site through the evening to ensure all bushings tested correctly, ultimately allowing the customer to successfully re-energize Friday night.

This emergency response exemplifies the power of collaboration across Quanta Services and showcases the skill, professionalism, and responsiveness of our Tech Services team. Great work by Nick, Chanse, and James on delivering when it mattered most.
